It seems I've got the flat. Nothing signed, and no money has changed hands yet, but I've said I want it and they've said it's ok, and that seems to be enough. Worryingly informal, but that seems to be the way things are - we'll see if a gentleman's word really is his bond in the next few weeks. It was similar when I renewed my contract at work. I scribbled "I intend to renew my contract." on a piece of paper, gave it to my boss, and that was it.
Joined a swimming pool - foolish first session. I forgot to take my trunks, and the largest they had for hire, even at "LL" size, were tiny. They were decent, but mildly uncomfortable. The second faux pas was not wearing a swimming cap, which turns out to be compulsory; the attendants agitatedly required me to leave the pool after only one length. The product of my two errors was my standing by the side of the pool in my tiny trunks while someone brought me a cap, feeling foolish.
